I have found out what happens to people who grew up listening to the same kind of music I did. They form a band called Sugar Ray, and make an album just like this. I'm serious, almost every song on this cd reminds me of something I heard while I was growing up in the late '70-to mid '80's. It's a magical mystery trip, and I think I like it....
You may have noticed 2 tracks with the same name -- not even close to the same song. Track one starts out like death metal, complete with the voice of hell exhorting you to do such evil deeds as -- 'be nice to your sister', 'don't play ball in the house' and 'don't run with scissors'. The other one, track 13, sounds like a sad version of 'Every Morning' played on my late grandfathers dilapidated old Lowrey organ. Obviously enough, Abracadabra sounds remarkably similar to Steve Miller's original. There are tracks that remind me of old Clash tunes, 70's pop, punk, new wave, funk -- you name it, if it was going down during the Carter-Reagan years, these boys have a song that sound likes it. And if the song doesn't sound like it fits in, it still has the same kind of beat that makes you want to strap a pair of roller skates (not blades) on your feet and go around in circles while the mirror ball spins. The youngsters might not appreciate that, but this old coot sure does. There is one thing that really annoys me about this cd though. I was thinking about how I could package my own demo cd's (when I finally get off my butt and start working on them), and I thought it would be cool to put the face of a clock on the cd (I plan on calling my demo The Passing of a Year, it's one of the tracks). So did Sugar Ray. Now I'll have to think of something else. Bummer
