Most people watch a movie because it gives them a chance to live a life other than their own, if only for two hours. This video on the other hand, appeals to me because I can relate to it so well, especially when my own wife told me She's Having A Baby. Actually, my life isn't quite like this one. My wedding was a bit of a surprise to me (we had been engaged on and off (mostly off) and my wife called me out of the blue one day and said let's do it .. next week .. I've already got my dress .. so, we did) and, well .. ok .. maybe it was a lot like the movie.
Kevin Bacon is getting married to Elizabeth McGovern as the film opens. Alec Baldwin is there as best man, and is telling Kevin that he really doesn't have to do this (my best man was just disappointed she was marrying me instead of him). Kevin flashes back to their first meeting back in high school (implying that they've been together for a while) and gives a bit of history. Then we have the ceremony, complete with Kevin imagining the minister saying things that they should say in the ceremony, but don't (like wilt thou always remember to put down the toilet lid in the middle of the night). Then the happy couple drives across country, so Kevin can go to Graduate School (in my case, it was my wife getting her Master's degree, was only across the state, and she was almost done anyway). That finished, they move back to the suburbs (this being a John Hughes film, that means they moved to Shermer IL.), where Kevin could go to work for an ad agency, and they could get a 3 bedroom, 2 bath mortgage (ours is actually only a 3 bedroom, bath-and-a-half mortgage, but close enough). They meet the nieghbors, have block parties, and are generally eccentric (no block parties, but I do have some unusual nieghbors). Eventually, Elizabeth feels the ticking of her biological clock, and decides to pitch the BC pills (what is this with women and their clocks?). Kevin Panics. Elizabeth isn't getting pregnant though, so they see a doctor, where Kevin gets to contribute a sample (fortunately I was spared that), and gets dragged into bed whenever his wife thinks the time is right for conception (I wasn't spared that). She conceives, and we get a montage of shots representing the pregnancy (Lamaze classes, nursery preparations, and dealing with "The Belly"). Finally, the day arrives, Elizabeth is cool calm and collected, Kevin is a nervous wreck (yep, got that one exactly right). After some complications, they were presented with a darling little boy (we had a slightly early, but otherwise picture perfect delivery with a little girl). He writes his book, and they all live happily ever after (I write my review of their movie and life is so far so good).
My wife didn't even want to see the box for this while she was pregnant (which was hard, because this is one of the ones that didn't fit in the cabinet, and it sat on top of the VCR), because she remembered the problem delivery, and didn't want to jinx herself. But if you have a kid, you may find a lot in this movie to relate to. Besides, at the end (during the credits) various stars are filmed recommending names for the new arrival, including, Dan Ackroyd, Matthew Broderick (in his Ferris Buehler guise) John Candy, Harold Ramis, and lot's of others. Really cute.
